About HALO

HALO is a No-kill, 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to ending pet overpopulation.

HALO was founded in 1994 by two women, Michel and Heather, out of their home in Phoenix, Arizona. Michel and Heather started HALO because they love animals and couldn't just stand by and watch millions of cats and dogs being euthanized needlessly.

HALO is helping to end the pet overpopulation epidemic by providing temporary shelter to abandoned cats and dogs until a permanent home can be found.

Each year, HALO places over 2,500 abandoned animals in loving, forever homes.

Please do your part to help the needless killing of more than 900 dogs and cats each week in Maricopa County and have your pet spayed or neutered.

Why does HALO Spay and Neuter Young Animals?

Many people ask this question of HALO and other rescue organizations that spay or neuter every animal before adoption. According to Arizona law, any incorporated animal welfare agency is required to have their animals sterilized prior to adoption. Click here to read more about HALO's stance on spaying and neutering.

Our Partners

HALO Animal Rescue is a proud partner of the Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Maricopa County and Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project in Maricopa County, which are sponsored by generous grants from Maddie's Fund®, The Pet Rescue Foundation (www.maddiesfund.org). The foundation and projects are named for Maddie, who was a very special Miniature Schnauzer. Maddie captivated her human caregivers so completely they started a $240 million foundation in her name so that millions of dogs and cats could be given a better life.

The goal of these innovative and forward-thinking grant projects is that by 2012, Maricopa County will be a community in which every healthy or treatable dog and cat in our animal shelters can be guaranteed a permanent home.

The two collaborative projects involve twelve animal welfare organizations and dozens of veterinarians. They specifically focus on increasing adoptions from animal shelters and rescue groups and facilitating low cost spay/neuter opportunities.

All of the organizations in the Maddie's Projects work independently on the specific goals of the projects in which they are involved, and the groups also join together as a coalition to share ideas, strategies, and successes that help further the projects' ultimate goal.

About Maddie's Fund®: Maddie's Fund®, The Pet Rescue Foundation, (www.maddiesfund.org) is a family foundation funded by Workday and PeopleSoft Founder Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl. Maddie's Fund is helping to create a no-kill nation where all healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats are guaranteed a loving home.

To achieve this goal, Maddie's Fund is investing its resources in building community collaborations where animal welfare organizations come together to develop successful models of lifesaving; in veterinary colleges to help shelter medicine become part of the veterinary curriculum; in private practice veterinarians to encourage greater participation in the animal welfare cause; and in the implementation of national strategies to collect and report shelter statistics. Maddie’s Fund is named after the family’s beloved Miniature Schnauzer who passed away in 1997.
